Suits

It is said that ‘nothing gives away a man’s standing as a gentleman so much as his clothes.’ The men’s suit, whose heritage stems from military garb, was designed to highlight a man’s strengths. When cut properly and made with a fabric that drapes well and compliments the wearer, it signals authority and commands attention.

Trousers

The perfect pair of trousers should follow the natural shape of a man’s body. Widest at the waist, tapering all the way to the ankles, with no excess fabric hanging loose or billowing. Nevertheless, trousers should be loose enough to allow for movement, and not too tight, which causes wrinkling and bunching around the thighs.

The “fall” of dress trousers — the distance from the waist to the crotch — is longer than that of casual pants. Therefore, contemporary jeans and chinos are often fitted to be worn at the hips, while dress pants should sit higher resting comfortably above the hips.

On the subject of pleated or not, trend-setters and fashion designers don’t always agree. Pleats add extra flexibility and comfort; however, plain front trousers offer a narrower, sleeker front than pleated trousers and are particularly suited to tall, slim men. There is no hard and fast rule, rather style is dictated either by functionality or fashion. Pleated trousers are generally seen as a little smarter than those without pleats, and therefore better-suited to suits or formal trousers.

Most dress pants have a small band around each ankle called “cuffs” or “turnups”. Not a necessary embellishment, they are often the best-looking option for most men, adding a bit of extra weight to the garment, which helps to pull them straight at the bottom and keeps them from billowing. A well-fitted cuff should rest against the back of a man’s shoe and drape just on top of the front of the shoe. In the interests of balance, pleated trousers almost always feature cuffs and plain-front trousers are frequently without.
