Nothing says ‘gentleman’ more so than a smart pair of shoes.
The less formal smart-casual brogue is the perfect dress shoe to wear with chinos or for any smart-casual event. The pattern of heavy perforations and pinking (brogueing) along the seams of the shoe originally served a purpose in that they allowed water to escape from the holes when walking in soggy fields in the countryside.
For formal Black-Tie events the shoe of choice would be the Oxford. Oxford shoes use what is known as a closed lacing structure – the eyelet tabs are sewn under the upper part of the shoe (the vamp) – giving them an elegant, streamlined appearance.
In sharp contrast, the Derby – also sometimes called a Gibson – has eyelet tabs that are open at the bottom.
